Gladiator Fanatics at Pompeii by Alexis Christensen

Lecture Info: Gladiators have fascinated ancient and modern audiences alike. These enslaved combatants were sports idols, sex symbols, and markers of status. Home to the oldest, permanent amphitheater in Italy, Pompeii provides a glimpse of the popularity of gladiators. Their images decorate tombs and houses, appear in well-executed frescoes and crudely drawn graffiti. For the people of Pompeii gladiators not only provided entertainment, but also complex images of power and status affirming their way of life.
